Step One:
Prepare your area. This is the most important step to ensuring your installation is clean and that it flows without incident. Lay tarps around the entire perimeter of the home. If there is a pool, tarp over the pool.
Step Two:
Once the roof is scrapped off, Garvin Exteriors will replaced any rotted or defective wood around chimneys, pipe collars and valleys. We include 192 square feet of roof decking free of charge on all roof installations.
Step Three:
We install a Drip Edge. A drip edge is a piece of aluminum trim that goes around the entire perimeter of your roof. It prevents any water from curling under the shingle and getting into your home.
There are many different drip edge types and sizes. The most common types are C and T Styles. The C-Style is a perfect 90 degree angle that fits flush with your roof line and fascia. Typically comes in 2”x2” sizes. A T-style is what Garvin Exteriors recommends to use. This style is shaped like a T and has fits along the roof line but also allows the shingle the lay on top of it. This prevents any wind from lifting the shingle or heat curling the shingle downward over time.
Step Four:
Next we install our IKO Stormtite Ice and Water Protection. Armourgard will protect your roof from all the high wind storms in Houston. It’s comes in 3 foot rolls and is installed around the most susceptible areas of your roof. The roof-wall intersections, chimneys, valleys, pipes and the entire perimeter of your home.
Step Five:
IKO Stormtite Underlayment. Stormtite underlayment will prevent any water from getting into your home. This breathable underlayment is installed over the entire roof. Most contractors use, tar paper which is a non-breathable underlayment. There is a very good chance you have tar paper under your shingles right now. The reason why you need a breathable underlayment is ventilation. Moisture can get trapped in-between the roof and the shingle and your attic is always hot.
Stormtite is a synthetic vapor barrier that keeps all the moisture away from your roof decking. It’s tear resistant so our installers won’t be able to damage an area where water can get it. And just like our Amourgard it self seals around all the nails.
Step Six:
Installation of IKO Leading Edge Plus. This material goes around the entire perimeter of the home giving you complete coverage against the wind blowing up the shingle and keeping the shingles secured to your roof.
Step Seven:
IKO Hip and Ridge Shingles. These are pre-curved shingles that are installed on all ridge and hip areas of the roof. At the peak of the roof we cut a 4-6 inch gap. Doing this allows the hot air to escape your attic keeping it cooler in the heat of the summer. The hips now have dimension and stand out among other shingles in the industry. Protecting against wind and hail.
Step Eight:
Garvin Exteriors will also use new flashing around all roof protrusions. We use, Bullet Boot around 1 1/2 to 4” pipes. This is a flexible one-piece flexible rubber pipe flashing design. It prevents all critters from getting in and squirrels will no longer sharpen their teeth on your vent pipes.

Step Nine:
The last step is to install the shingles. Garvin Exteriors installs, IKO Dynasty Shingles.
Out of all the different shingles we tested, we choose this shingle because this is the shingle we would want on our home in Houston.
IKO is now the largest shingle exporter in the US, topping GAF who is the most widely known. They have been family owned since 1951 and have a manufacturing plant right here in Texas. So all of our raw materials are made right here in Texas. They call this vertical integration. This gives them more of a high quality consistent product so you will never have a shingle that just doesn’t look quite right.
IKO Dynasty shingles can withstand a 2” ball of hail. The Dynasty shingle been tested by the Texas Department of Insurance - from 20 feet they had to drop this ball twice in the same spot to earn a hail protection rating.
The main difference between all other shingles and what makes this shingle so great is, IKO Armourzone. Armourzone is a 1 ¼-inch-wide nailing surface compared to 1/4” or 1/2” nailing surfaces. It’s a tear-resistant band that provides even more fastening strength over a wider surface area of the shingle. When installed, the nails in this area are optimally positioned to help resist nail pull-through and shingle blow-off, even in 130mph winds!
Step Ten:
Enjoy your Roof.
